The Athenry Foundation For Arts has embarked on production of a six part documentary series ‘Ironland’, which explores the Iron Age History of The Fir Belg Of County Galway.
It is said that an advanced Iron Age civilization was formed by the Fir Belg people in the West of Ireland around 50 BC. They established two royal centres, firstly at Turoe then at Athenry. These centres or Oppidums were protected by a series of defensive embankments, which eventually extended across County Galway as their empire expanded.
The Ironland documentary series explores this globally unique but little known civilisation.
